Character NAME: Hilbert
Canon & MEDIUM: Pokémon White, video game
Canon PULL-POINT: Post-game + details below.
Character AGE: 16
Character ABILITIES: Excellent battler. Seriously, that's it. Well, he's good at connecting to others, but that's more of a personality trait than a trained ability.
Character HISTORY: Two links for his canon history through the game, though with some minor details added!
- Said "yes" to all of N's questions, but was hesitant in accepting the responsibilities of taking the Dark Stone from Lenora because he wasn't sure if he could awaken Zekrom. He relented after Alder begged him to stop N if needed, though the Champion was confident it wouldn't come to that.
- Post-game, Hilbert beat Cynthia in Undella Town, conquered the Battle Subway (Single, Double, and Multi with his defacto partner Hilda), calmed Thundorus's rage with a battle, dispelled the illusion of Lostlorn Forest and calmed the Zoroark there by capturing it, befriended Victini in Liberty Garden, found all the Sages but Ghetsis, and battled every trainer in all of Unova.
- His starter was Oshawott (Rotta).
- He'd begun to think about following N, to find him and check up to see how his friend was doing, and was preparing to set out.
Character PERSONALITY:
Hilbert is first and foremost a happy kind of person. He's friendly and loves to talk to people he doesn't know like an old man does. His cheerful demeanor tends to attract people to him like a butterflies to a bush, but this also means he has more "friends" than he actually does friends. It doesn't mean he doesn't appreciate or care for them any less, but they're more likely just to see this one side of him than any other. The fact Hilbert is this personable and how he loves to be around others means he's seen as superficial friendly and many might see him as a fake. He's very genuine in his kindness though, make no mistake of that!
In fact, his kindness is so true that it tends to make him thin himself out a lot. Hilbert is the type of person who will be everywhere and do anything for someone he considers a friend, even if it means exhaustion and eventual sickness. He likes making people feel good and being there for them does that. And when he does fall sick, he doesn't let anyone know and suffers silently as it wears at him. It's during these extreme times, and some other stressful situations, that Hilbert will drop everything and tell no one where he's heading to, just start walking and go nowhere. He's fine being alone. He knows he's not alone alone because if he really needed to he could just call up Cheren or Bianca or even his Mom and talk about things, but he wouldn't want to bother them with his issues so he tends to avoid doing that.
Traveling has always been a love of Hilbert's. It fulfills his two needs in life: Meeting new people and similarly walking off whatever is bothering him. Anyone who doesn't know him doesn't know that he's got problems, he can pretend he's fine when he's traveling even if it means being into a crowd and letting himself be pushed. He actually prefers this, because then he doesn't sink into thought and brooding - he hates city air though and prefers the clean forests and mountains, but those places force him to sit and think about things. And he hates that because he tends to allow things (problems, stresses, things that bother him, etc) to pile up and it more or less spirals down onto him like a pair of Mandibuzz in areas like that. And then he wants to do things like cry and, while he's pretty in touch with his heart and feelings, crying is something that makes people worry and that's not good. He only cries when there's not another soul to see.
To add on, he hates conflict. Not Pokémon battles, since they're a way to connect to others and see a side of someone you didn't know before, but verbal and physical fights. Things that can ruin friendships. Hilbert is a heart over head person and he doesn't say the right things a lot of the time because he rushes forward and he doesn't like that. As such, he closes himself off from problems and situations he's involved in and pretends they 1. don't exist or 1. are soemthing he'll handle as he comes. Neither of which end well for him. They just stack and stack because Hilbert doesn't tell anyone if he has problems with them or if he's feeling down, favoring a smile over a frown, and in the end they all fall on him and he escapes off so he doesn't have to deal with it. He can deal with the aftershocks, but don't ask him to be in the middle of it.
Which is why being the Hero of Ideals, N's counterpart in battle, was something he was reluctant and all together not okay with. He couldn't run from it; it was his responsibility, in the end, to make sure N understood that while his Truth may be right in some cases Hilbert's Ideals - as well as the Ideals of every Trainer - was something that held water as well: That Pokémon and humans can work with one another and become equally stronger between them. Hilbert wasn't afraid so much of battling N and the thought of losing as he was that his heart wouldn't be strong enough to overcome N's. That his Ideals weren't true or were just a selfish in the moment sort of thing because he didn't want to lose the friends he had made over the course of his journey within his team. It really shook him, it really did, but as of now he's okay with it. Dreams change, but what you believe inyour heart won't ever.
Hilbert is determined, very much so, to make others understand that bonds are one of the most important things in life. You can bump into someone on the street and not know anything about them unless you give them a chance, and you might meet a wonderful person with a wonderful dream that you'd never regret meeting if you just said "Hello." He places great faith and heart into this matter, and is genuinely hurt if they're used wrongly. Unfortunately, Hilbert trusts very easily and is quite gulliable. Once bitten, however, he's more wary of having the situation happen over once more - and still manages to give second chances! Sadly, his determination also lends to the part of him that hates conflict with his friends because he might lose those friends and thus will go for a compromise. And he will try very, very hard for that compromise. Because of this, he's considered wishy-washy at times and someone who lives to please when all he really wants is to keep his precious bonds safe.
He is also foolishly brave, the kind of guy to stand in front of his friend and a gun just because he thinks their friendship is worth that. That they're worth more than his health is, because he'll just get better in no time but he might lose them and that isn't acceptable. He's a protector. A diplomat over a fighter. The idea that he's precious to someone else too is out of his reach, because he has a Neutral sort of presence and thinks that the sacrifice of one to save many is something worth following. A martyr, though he's not going to throw himself on a stake unless it's a last resort. This sort of self-sacrifice is annoying to a ton of people, but because it rarely coms out at home no one really knows.
(It doesn't help that he was The Only One who could counter N.)
Hilbert has an unusual passion for fishing, but it fits him perfectly: It's solitary, it's rewarding, and he gets to travel as much as the drops of water in the river do. He loves spending time with people, really, he loves it, but to recharge he needs to be by himself fishing, or away from people who know him, or just hanging with his Pokémon. Hilbert hates feeling tired around people and it's one of those things he hides behind a smile, not because it's easier to pretend he's not feeling well but because he just doesn't want to worry anyone. He doesn't understand why people worry about him since he can handle his own things and he's always fine in the end.
He also likes learning about places and Pokémon as much as he likes seeing and traveling them! Learning gives him a good feeling because he's doing something and it's productive and worthwhile. Hilbert can sit down and read for hours on end if it's about something he's interested in, like why Shellos are different colors on each side of Sinnoh's famous mountain range, and won't even notice the time passing until he can't see the words in his current lighting anymore. This goes hand-in-hand with his passion for teaching others random, trivial facts if the topic comes up, because it's really cool to learn things like this even if they may seem useless at the time. It might be useful sometime, like on the famous gameshow Liepardy.
» EXSILIUM INFORMATION
Chosen WEAPON: Hilbert would choose not a weapon would most think of but is one regardless: a shield. The way it evolves is that, as Hilbert gets (unfortunately) more comfortable with fighting, it will start to gain things he can actually use to attack enemies - like spikes and finally one long lance-like addition to its front. It'll become heavier by nature, but not cumbersome.
Character INVENTORY: His clothes, as well as his bag from the same picture, though it won't contain much but his most important items:
- Bike
- Super Rod
- Xtransceiver
- Pal Pad (no numbers)
- Map of Unova (written all over)
- Vs. Recorder
- Running shoes
- A hand-held notebook full of trivia about Pokémon

First PERSON: [Right. It's time! Network, prepared to be amazed, because there is going to be something of a Pokémon Magic Show for you today!
Hilbert isn't dressed any fancier - except his hat is off and his hair slicked back - and he's standing beside the stove in iis apartment, grinning. What could possibly be going on?]
Okay, okay! So back in my world, we've got Pokémon. These guys can do a ton of different things. Like, things you would've even believe possible. One of them was even said to have created the world! Amazing, right? Anyway, I've got a pretty special one myself, and I'd thought it'd be interesting to show off what this little guy can do. Don't worry - he won't break anything.
[... He hopes. He taps the stove a few times and it starts to glow, turning an orange color and a face appearing on it.]
Rotom, an Electric- and Ghost-type Pokémon, can possess any type of electrical object and likes to do so 'cause it's fun to scare people. It even changes types with this method of "evolution!"
[He puts bunny quotes over the evolution part because it's only a technical evolution.]
For example, right now Eeks - that's my Rotom's name - is still an Electric-type Pokémon, but he's also a Fire-type too because of the oven's heat! If we move him to, say, the television...
[Please don't break please don't break-- okay good in the TV.]
Then he becomes a Ghost-type again because televisions don't have a real elemental property. Washers would give him something like water, and -- Hey! What're you doing?!
[Eeks is taking over your tablet, Hilbert, what else does it look like? The feed goes black, then Rotom appears on it and giggles. Even as a gentle kind of Pokémon, it liked to play tricks, though it's careful not to wreck shit. Just to have some fun. Maybe one day it'd have the courage to try talking to them. You guys can still hear Hilbert though, and he sighs.]
I did say any electrical object, huh? I hope you can't travel around the network like that... Anyway, if you can still hear me or something, sorry about that! Eeks gets a little excited around things he hasn't really touched before, but he shouldn't be able to mess with you guys that much.
[Even a mutter's audiable.]
At least nothing broke this time...
Third PERSON: Hilbert looks at The Outlands and wishes they were the forests of Unova. They're okay, he guesses, but it's dangerous out here - too dangerous to go walking like he wants. He can't even fish here since all of it's polluted, and if there is any it's all hidden very well, and the city is slowly filling with people he knows, either by his own friendliness or from home. He doesn't complain though. It's home now, probably, and there's a lot of good to do here! By being here, he's keeping those masked guys out of his home! So... This is enough, probably, he doesn't really have a reason to complain. Hilbert sighs and stretches, trying to smile despite feeling completely worn down from everything. Eeks floats by his shoulder, bright as always, and he just waves off the little Pokémon's worrying call.
"I'm just thinking of home, that's all. You think they've got books about Unova in the library? I think that'd be pretty nice. Let's go check it out, Eeks, you can take over a lamp or something." Eeks lets out a happy electronic sound (or that's what Hilbert considers it) and flies ahead, its trainer following with a laugh.
Pokémon had always been a constant source of comfort for Hilbert. From the Pidoves that sat outside his window as he fed them leftovers, to the newest and most energized member of his team, a Rotom he received from a trade, he had always loved their company. It wasn't that he disliked human contact, it's just that after a time he'd feel worn down and thinned and needed some time for himself. With beings that didn't expect him to act a certain way or to listen to others constantly complain. It sounds really bad when he thinks about it in that way. Hilbert doesn't mind listening to others, he loves it because it helps him get his mind off his own troubles, but a guy just needs a break now and then, as much as it makes him feel bad to stay away sometimes.
Eeks stays close by Hilbert as they wander towards the Library, and once inside he scours the shelves for books to read. It's pretty quiet, not to mention there's a ton of things to learn, and he finally finds one he's looking for and sits down with it, showing the Rotom the pages and reading quietly to it. If he couldn't walk around outside, then he'd just spend his time reading. He could work with people in this kind of atmosphere - maybe. If not, then this would become his go-to place to relax. That sounds good to him. Eeks enjoys it too, especially learning about Sinnoh where it originated from, and Hilbert grins. Things may be a little rough here, but at least this place was the same as home.
» ADDITIONAL NOTES
Hilbert is also going to bring the Rotom he traded for a Ditto from a girl in a trailer. As he'll probably be having it battle alongside him more than he'll be battling himself...
