Character Information

Character Name: Hilbert Lécuyer
Character Age & Birthdate: 16; October 10, 2003
Character Canon: Pokémon

Character AU History: Hilbert would say he had a boring chilhood full of normal things, like school and their class wide valentines, until news broke out across the unavoidable media of America about the first Kaiju attack in the west. After the second attack, his life became a bunch of mandatory drills on top of the normalcy of before - just in case a Kaiju chose to attack the northeast - and the location of various refugee centers became common knowledge too.

And in 2015, the eleven year old watched in amazement as the Brawler Yukon killed Karloff. It was then that he decided that he wanted to work with these giant robots in order to protect the world, spurred by America's usual nationalist response in times of conflict. He didn't want to be a hero, the glory and spotlight was never his thing, but to be able to be up close and personal with the machines that gave hope to the world? A dream that propelled his interest in robotics and science through middle school. One thing Hilbert could pride himself in was making a working reconstruction of Romeo Blue at the highlight of his club career at thirteen, still sitting on his shelf collecting dust beside a trophy for best robot.

He's a happy fifteen year old when the Drift Compatibility Testing Facilities open to the public, even if he doesn't really want to pilot a Jaeger himself, and since he's in a big city there was no problem in finding one. After testing and troubles dealing with stress, Hilbert finally finds himself on call for when the Jaeger Academy opens in February. He's got the minumum management needed, and he's not going to waste this chance.

Also, despite his French last name, he doesn't speak a lick of it outside of pronouncing his surname. Doesn't really care for any language except computer, though he had a mandatory Spanish class growing up... that he barely passed.

Character Personality: Growing up in the state of New York gave Hilbert a few things: A slight accent (tawk, kawfee, etc), the ability to bike hours from one side of Long Island to the other, and the chance to live in relative peace outside the usual city ongoings. The Atlantic Ocean obviously didn't get much action when it came to the Kaiju attack, something he was kind of thankful for growing up since he only wanted to see one thing and that were the robots that utterly destroyed the aliens. When it went live on television - his mom wasn't someone to turn the channel when the breaking news came on, since it's better to know about your world than to be hid from it - he found himself continuously thrilled even at the age of nine. It only got worse when he got older, because...

Hilbert's definitely the type of person who gets into something and holds onto it, whether it's a belief or a interest in giant monster mashing machines with a radiation problem. They are, to him, the hope of humanity. Something he wants to help with. Which ultimately spurs him to finding out every piece of info about the Jaegers and he's kind of a trivia nerd because of it.

He knows the nationality of every one built thus far, what they're made of from head to toe, the kind of cores that power them, why and how the Mark system was formed and what they mean - all that. The pilots don't hold his interest too much, on the other hand, and the Kaiju themselves are not his topic of choice. While he's not that boastful, he would proudly say he created a robotic copy of the Romeo Blue in his robotics club in middle school - in looks anyway.

Sad to say that because of this obsession, he is slightly lacking in social skills. He's got enough to get by, but get him onto this topic and he'll babble until you shut him up. Hilbert's also got a bad habit of rambling on and on when he's nervous too, but as a whole he likes to be around people and most importantly to help them out in any way he can. Even at his own expense.

Thankfully, his mind's too full of robots to think about relationships. The only thing he's in love with is the various forms of Jaeger that have been made across the years.

That aside, Hilbert is basically a silent protagonist since he's from a Pokémon game and all, but with observations on his actual character design and how he's treated in game gives clues to how he's at least perceived. He's a young man with a quiet confidence who can be unsure of himself when it comes to things he'd always thought about as normal - having Pokémon around versus not having them at all, as Team Plasma's philosophy goes - and who tends to shoulder things on his own. He seems to be the kind of person who'd hide things to keep others from worrying if he could, though you can read it on his face if you know him. The way this translates into the game is not through a connection to animals, but the very firm love of the hope that Jaegers represent and the thought of them not being something that can beat Kaiju doesn't even cross his mind.

He'd get one hell of a surprise if the Kaiju became more intelligent and evolved, since he just thinks of them as giant movie monsters.

The way he is is actually said to be a "neutral" sort of presence, not swaying to a harsh reality or head in the clouds, and I've placed him as somewhat non-confrontational in theory, but in practice he's the first to put a foot forward to stop what he thinks is wrong. He'd love to think of himself as peaceful - and he is! he doesn't start fights, he finishes them! - but what it comes down to is that if something is close to his heart he'll do whatever he needs to ensure the future he wants to protect. Which is why he wants to be an engineer, to maintain and build humanity's line of defense.

And why he'd pilot one if he felt like he needed to, against his better judgement of not wanting to face against the Kaiju. For Hilbert, it's definitely need over desire. An in canon example is when he has to accept the responsibility of "becoming" a hero to face off against N (the king/boss of Team Plasma who was basically a well intentioned extremist) and the dragon that'd ally itself with him - should Alder, the Champion, fall, it would be up to Hilbert to carry the future on his shoulders. While he didn't know if he'd be strong enough to do it, he accepted it because he had to. Because N wouldn't have taken anyone else. He's very open to orders like that and would rarely disobey one unless it was honestly against his line of morals. Like how Gipsy Danger went to save the fishing boat in the beginning of the movie, just as an example.

Going back into his canon, there's a point where he's facing off against N and the stone that the dragon is formed from doesn't react. While N's disappointed, Hilbert decides at that moment that even if he doesn't have the legendary dragon's help, he's going to protect the future of Unova and fight N. The hope of a world where Pokémon and people stayed together with their cherishable bonds. So in the end the dragon awakens because of this strong determination for that future, but the important part of the event is Hilbert's steadfastness when it comes to doing what's right against any odds. As long as he's got people he trusts by his side - this would include his Drifting partners - and a future to fight for, Hilbert would do anything.

... Still, he'd definitely prefer working with the Jaegers over fighting in them. Unless ordered otherwise.

Why is your character joining the Jaeger Academy?: To become an engineer, hopefully. He's got no interest in piloting them himself or in the Kaiju they're fighting - not yet, they're just monsters on TV like Godzilla - but the robots themselves? Dreams of keeping them in top shape and even building them.

That said, he thinks that being inside them might be pretty cool too.
